Mizoram Fire Service Organisation previously known as 'Fire Brigade' was set up on 1.9.1972 with 17 staff at Aizawl, near Aizawl Police Station under the Mizoram Police Department. As the need for setting up of more Fire Stations increases with the rapid increase of population and economic growth, another Fire Stations & Sub-Stations were established at Lunglei on 17.3.1975, Saiha on 24.1.1991, Kolasib on 14.9.1992, Tlabung on 7.6.1995 and Serchhip on 17.4.1998. Due to fire hazards in newly created District Hqrs. at Champhai and Lawngtlai, two fire stations were again set up on 6.3.2008 and 25.5.1998 respectively without formal sanctions pulling staff from existing strength of other Fire stations. The Govt. felt the need to strengthen the Fire Brigade and placed into full unit under the control of the Superintendent of Police with other Senior Officers since 17.8.1992 and now it has been further strengthen with the creation of Director Post from 20.3.2008. The Director has been declared as Head of Department in respect of financial transaction since 30.10.2008. The name of Mizoram Fire Service Organisation was also changed into Fire & Emergency Services in 2004, so that it encompasses not only fire fighting but also emergency services.
The main equipments for fire fighting and other emergencies like Fire engines, Fire extinguishers, various tools and equipments have been improving by procuring from State Plan fund, Centrally Sponsored Schemes and under Finance Commission, Govt. of India.
At present, Mizoram Fire & Emergency Services is having 9 (nine) Fire Stations in the District headquarters of Aizawl, Lunglei, Lawngtlai, Saiha, Serchhip, Champhai, Kolasib, Mamit and civil sub-division Hqrs. of Tlabung with Director as its head at Headquarters Office, Hunthar veng, Aizawl. Each Fire station is headed by one Officer-in-charge of the rank of Station Officer or Leading Fireman. Apart from this, two Mobile temporary stations in Aizawl city are manned from Aizawl Fire station, and seven Firemen are deputed to Lengpui Airport to assist Airport Fire staff. Due to insufficiency of staff some constables (2/3 each) are attached to assist Fireman in the stations from the State Armed police Battalions. The sanctioned strength of F&ES is 217 i.e 176 Fire Fighting personnel assisted by 41 Administrative staff..
Besides the nine nos. of existing Fire stations, three new Fire stations are proposed to established soon at – (i) Aizawl East, ITI veng where Labour & Employment Deptt. donated land for construction of Fire station building under 13th Finance commission award during 2012-13, (ii) Aizawl South, where suitable arrangement for construction of FS within PHQ complex, khatla was made by the Police Department to be constructed under 13 FS during 2012-13 and (iii) Aizawl North FS proposed to construct building at suitable place in the northern side of Aizawl city.
Deputy Commissioner, Champhai District donated suitable site for construction of Champhai FS under 13 FC during 2012-13 at old DC complex, Bethel veng Champhai. Besides, one Type-II Quarters 4-units is also to be constructed at Saitual Police complex under 13 FC within 2012-13.
Fire & Emergency Services in Mizoram state is functioning under the command and control of Mizoram Police Department as one unit in which Director, DIGP is the head of the unit who look after the whole unit with the help of other senior Officers (SP,ASP & DySP, etc).
